The Power of Three by jonpeeoh
It is widely understood that we
live in a reality of duality. That without up, there can be no down. Without
left, no right. And so on. And of course that is true. But there is an elephant
in the room, and nobody's talking about it.
Oh sure, there are tons of instances of reference to this - the Christian
trilogy (symbolically), The Buddhist concept of the "Middle Path" (implying
higher and lower paths), and many others in many other religions, philosophies,
what have you.
The thing I'm talking about is the third factor. The black and white's grey, the
space between left and right, up and down, forward and backward. The third
portion is inevitable given the first two. The third is that scale which lies
between the opposites.
Anything you notice is a gift. Evil is a gift because it allows for good.
Darkness is a gift because it allows for light. You can not have one without the
other, for without contrast, there is no concept. No concept, no experience.
And so the magic of life lies not in duality, but in the space in between which
is permitted by the existence of the duality. It is best, in my mind, not to
grasp onto one of the two end posts, but to walk the fence in the middle. You
must learn to find a balance in all things in order to find the most peaceful,
productive and joyful way to experience.
This process is different for every individual. Some get their kicks from war,
some from peace. Some get their kicks from the in-between rallies against or for
war. In doing so, they fight a war of their own, but on their own terms.
So I would challenge you, first of all, to look at those things in your life
which you despise. Do not give them much energy, for by the act of despising
them you give them power in your life. But take note just enough to realize that
your despising in itself gives you an indicator to something you have issue
with. Now find the polar opposite of that thing and contemplate it. Contemplate
yourself within it. Does that work for you?
Maybe it does, in which case you are found. But perhaps the opposite of that
which you despise is not justly flavored for you, and you now have the challenge
of finding your middle ground.
Learning to enjoy life is a process of finding your middle grounds in a world of
choices, in learning to navigate the third portion of duality - the in-between.
Secondly, I must admit I've been pulling your leg a little. The primary purpose
of this exercise is not just to identify your middle ground within duality,
although that is a beneficial exercise. Primarily, the purpose of this exercise
is to expand your mind a little, and get you thinking outside of your normal
bounds. When you expand above duality and consider the third portion, you begin
to find a folding point for your meditation. You may be able to fold away your
notions of duality, triality, whatever you want to call it, and begin to see
outside of the culturally taught boxes that we divide reality into.
When you begin to think entirely outside of "good" and "bad", "right" and
"wrong", "pretty" and "ugly", "love" and "hate", you begin to cultivate a more
natural impulse toward life, and you will find that, yes, many of your natural
feelings towards things can be reclassified down into words that said what you
were already saying. However, you will feel the meaning of that much more
deeply, and is an experience of the clarity of being which is impossible to
describe.
The funny thing is, many people
scoff at the notion of setting aside such concepts as "right" and "wrong". They
worry that this would inspire anarchy and evil. What I have found is that
humanity, in and of itself, happens to be a pretty decent lot, all-in-all. When
you set aside "good" and "bad", you lose the need for "guilt", which frees you
from torturing yourself for mistakes long past. Instead, everything becomes a
learning experience. And to the shock of those critics, you find that you
actually become a much finer, better person who treats people far more lovingly
than others who may treat others nicely because it's the "right" thing to do,
and then do not appreciate the joy and depth of that interaction. That is the
very definition of doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.
This physical universe (or multiverse as it were) is a giant playground, where
someone took the One (god, energy, whatever) and pulled it into two, then four,
then six, then eight, pulling in every direction, multidimensionally, until
there was a full-blown world to play in. Drop your silly notions of what is
"right" and "wrong", "good" and "bad", and you will find that you become a
better, happier, more loving and giving spirit, far more virtuous and prosperous
than you were when you attempted to become these things by defining them.
True morals comes from true morality, not from the taught-learned-accepted
reflex we call morality. With true morality comes joy and holiness (the
inability to err). And with that, ultimate freedom.
